Several parts of the SUNY Purchase campus are rumored to be haunted. The Elephant tree is said to sway back and forth even when there is no wind, allegedly because someone was once hanged from its branches (accounts vary on whether that person was a slave or a girl who committed suicide). There is also a house located across from the campus Starbucks said to be haunted by the ghost of an old man who hanged himself in either the basement or the attic. A small cemetery can be found at the school; students have reported hearing strange noises and seeing apparitions near the graves at night. The water tower is said to be haunted by the spirit of a young boy who drowned long ago.
