Spook Rock Road’s name comes from a large rock formation thought to have been of religious significance to the Lenape Tribes. According to legend, a Native woman and a Dutch man would beet at this rock, but when the other Dutch settlers discovered their relationship they quickly killed the couple. Their shadows can supposedly be seen under moonlight and their screams heard coming from the woods.

A different variation on the story states that the young woman was a tribal princess who ran off with her lover without her father’s permission. The couple paused at the rock, but a sudden flood swept them away to their deaths. The young maiden’s spirit is said to still haunt the spot to this day, her soft moans carried by the wind as she wanders in an endless search for her lost lover.
