Letchworth Village was a psychiatric hospital constructed in 1911 which, at its peak, consisted of over 130 buildings. The hospital was the site of the first human trial of the polio vaccine in 1950, but few other positive things can be said of the institute. As early as the 1920s reports of inadequate care were levied against the hospital. Residents of all ages were found unbathed, unclothed, malnourished, or otherwise neglected, and there even incidents of abuse between employees.

Despite the awful living conditions, Letchworth would not close until 1996. The campus remains abandoned and the buildings have fallen to serious disrepair. Trespassing on the property if forbidden, but that has not stopped accounts of ghostly sightings from surfacing. Many believe Letchworth is haunted by the spirits of those who were mistreated within its confines.
