SUNY Cortland is reported to be haunted by several ghosts. In Brockway Hall, the ghost of a former cook has been seen standing at the top of a staircase, and a bleeding football player is said to make an annual appearance in Room 716 of Clark Hall. Degroat Hall is rumored to be haunted as well, though details are less specific.

One of the more well-known ghosts on campus is Elizabeth, who is tied to Cheney Hall. Students say that she was pushed down the building’s stairs from the fourth floor by her boyfriend in the 1980s. Elizabeth died, but her spirit remained behind; witnesses claim she appears in a misty form with outstretched arms.
