The Rolling Hills Asylum opened in 1821 as the Genesee County Poor Farm, a brick building meant to house the poor, mentally ill, physically disabled, drunkards, and other locals in need of assistance. An actual functioning farm surrounding the house was maintained by able bodied residents. Those who died while in the farm’s care and had no next of kin were buried somewhere on the grounds, but current records are insufficient to determine exactly where their gravesites are located.

In the 1950s the building was converted into the Old County Home & Infirmary and in the 1990s it became an antiques mall. The store owners and visitors alike say that they have witnessed shadow people, moving objects, disembodied voices, mysterious screams, and doors that suddenly become impossible to open. The asylum is now open for group tours and ghost hunting, and has even begun renting paranormal investigation equipment.

  • Traveling to Vermont on a different road route

My father and I drove passed here because he had to take his work truck a different route up to our vacation home in Wilmington Vermont. I was with him in the truck heading up to finish packing the rest of the condo up so it could sell, when we approached this particular hospital he said your other grandfather on my side used to visit here before it was shut down due to haunted sightings, I thought he was joking with me because that's what we do, but truthfully I did see some ghostly figures lurking and watching us slow down in ongoing traffic when we approached the stop light, I did notice that it was closed and that it looked rickety and old. Truthfully I saw what I saw, and I am always interested in this stuff due to seeing abandoned places all around new york. Truthfully, I think it's haunted and It was very eerie during daylight.
