The New York Public Library is the second-largest public library in the United States behind the Library of Congress and the fourth-largest public library in the world. The library has branches in the boroughs of the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island and affiliations with academic and professional libraries in the New York metropolitan area.

The library was established in the 19th Century and its main branch was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967.

Along with offering over 50 million items for patrons, the library is also known to be the home to ghosts. Reports at this library include eerie noises, misplaced books that seem to end up on different shelves, and shadow figures that vanish when approached. The most famous tale surrounding the library includes the ghost of an old man that likes to "shush" visitors that are being too loud. The identity of the man has not been confirmed but some believe he was once a librarian or patron who was attached to the library.
