Local legend has it that this was the site where "The Montauk Project" took place. The military experiment involved the kidnapping of two boys who were made to try interacting with another dimension. In the process, one boy was able to pull forth a creature from the fourth dimension. The creature named Junior was said to have been contained underground where it continues to remain today.
Today the site is open to the public through the New York Department of State Parks who received the land as a donation.
Camp Hero was constructed in 1942. It served as a secretive military base and was built to appear like the typical New England fishing town. By 1981, the site shut down when the radar systems in place were deemed outdated.
